Eric Andrew: Bridging Cultures Through passion for basketball and community empowerment.

Introduction:

Eric Andrew is a London-based Dominican who has never forgotten his roots. Though he has been living in the U.K. for years, his heart remains firmly in his hometown of Portsmouth, Dominica. Not only has he maintained a close connection to the community, but he has also dedicated his time and resources to supporting a basketball team in Portsmouth. His story is one of passion, mentorship, and giving back.

Early Life in Portsmouth:

Growing up in Portsmouth, basketball was more than just a sport for Eric—it was a way to stay focused, motivated, and connected with his peers. His passion for the game was sparked at a young age, quickly marking him as one of the rising talents in his community.

Journey to London:

Years later, Eric moved to London to pursue better opportunities, yet his love for basketball—and his desire to uplift his community—stayed with him. While building a life for himself in the U.K., he kept a strong connection to Portsmouth, regularly visiting and staying involved in the town’s sports scene.

Giving Back to the Community:

In 2015, Eric took his passion a step further by starting a basketball initiative aimed at giving young athletes in Portsmouth the same opportunities he had growing up. He began supporting a local basketball team, providing equipment and funding, and eventually took on the role of mentor during his trips back home.

“Basketball was a big part of my life when I lived in Portsmouth,” Eric recalls. “I knew I wanted to give back to the young people there in a way that would inspire them to stay active, disciplined, and focused.”

Balancing Life in London and Portsmouth helping impact youth in the community.

Although Eric lives in London, he dedicates a significant portion of his time to the basketball team in Portsmouth. Whether through virtual coaching sessions, fundraising, or organising tournaments when he is on the island, he manages to juggle both roles effectively.

“Being able to mentor these kids and help them grow through basketball is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done,” he says. “It’s about more than just the game—it’s about building character and giving back.”

The Road Ahead:

Looking forward, Eric hopes to expand his support for the basketball community in Portsmouth. He’s already started planning a basketball camp to bring together coaches and players from across the Caribbean to share skills, knowledge, and opportunities.

“I want to create a pipeline where young people from Portsmouth can dream big and achieve their goals, whether through basketball or other paths in life,” Eric says.
