Dr. David Michael MBE, a proud Dominican national, has left an indelible mark on the history of policing and community service in the United Kingdom. Recently recognised as a Trailblazer and Icon by the London Borough of Lewisham, his contributions were highlighted at the Black History Month event Reclaiming Our Narratives, where Lewisham Council’s BAME Professional Network launched a map of Black Lewisham celebrating figures who have shaped the borough.
Dr. Michael’s pioneering journey began in 1972 when, at just 19 years old, he joined the Metropolitan Police Service, becoming one of only 11 Black officers among 28,000 at the time. Early in his career, he broke barriers as the first officer of African heritage to serve at Ladywell Police Station in Lewisham since the Metropolitan Police’s formation in 1829. Over the next three decades, he rose through the ranks, serving as Detective Sergeant in Lewisham in 1984 and retiring in 2002 as a distinguished Detective Chief Inspector.
Dr. Michael’s career and legacy stand as a testament to perseverance, excellence, and the impact of diversity in public service. Museum Voyaj is honoured to celebrate his story as an inspiration for Dominicans at home and abroad.
